The sound of Mapiko masks travels between Mozambique's past and present

The Sound of Masks, directed by Sara Gouveia, is a documentary depicting the life of a Mapiko dancer, who uses dance and his body as an experience of war and colonialism in Mozambique.

Mozambican dancer Atanásio Nyusi plays contemporary dance but also traditional dances. He is the main character of the documentary The Sound of Masks. He was born in northern Mozambique, near the border with Tanzania, land of the Makonde.

"They were the last people to be colonized and hence their importance in the transition and the struggle for independence from the Portuguese", explains Sara Gouveia.
