Brazilian publishing market declines for the fifth year in a row

With sales drops and crisis in bookstores, government purchases avoid bigger decline

For the Brazilian publishing market, 2018 was marked by the legally-backed restructuring requests filed by the country's two major bookstores. Now the crisis can be seen in numbers. Last year, considering the period's inflation rate, the sector shrank by 4.5%; - in nominal terms, the drop amounted to 0.9%.

These figures are included in a survey on the Brazilian Publishing Sector's Production and Sales, released on Monday (April 29). The survey was conducted by FIPE (Fundação Instituto de Pesquisas Econômicas - Foundation Institute for Economic Research) in conjunction with CBL (Câmara Brasileira do Livro - Brazilian Publishers Chamber) and SNEL (Sindicato Nacional dos Editores de Livros - National Union of Book Publishers).
