Livraria Lello, the historic bookshop and one of the most touristic places of the city of Porto, celebrated its 113 anniversary on 14 January 2019, with the launched of the three Public Offerings of Acquisition of first edition of Os Lusíadas (Portuguese and French), Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (English) and Gazeta da Restauração (Portuguese) in a joint investment that amount to 321,500 euros.
Most of the budget, worth around 250,000 euros, is reserved for the purchase of Os Lusíadas, Luís Vaz de Camões" poetic epic. Lello also offers 70 thousand euros to buy the first edition of the book "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" and another 1500 euros to acquire the edition number 1 of Gazeta da Restauração, the first Portuguese newspaper published in 1641.
The offerings, however, have a limited timeframe: June 10 for Os Lusíadas (Camões Day), July 31 for Harry Potter (Young Wizard's birthday) and May 3 for the newspaper (World Freedom Day Press). Until these dates, anyone who has any of these copies and wants to sell are welcomed to contact the historical bookstore in Porto.
The administrator of the Lello bookshop explains that the purpose of the initiative is to show that the book should not only be closed in libraries and collectors, but can be an object of investment and appreciation like other works of art, painting or sculpture.
Ranked by Lonely Planet as "the third most beautiful bookstores in the world", the bookshop Lello sells on average 1200 books per day and received 1.4 million visits in 2018.
