When I read the interview given by Roberto Roncon, an intensivist at Centro Hospitalar São João to the newspaper Expresso, this week, I found myself thinking about health professionals from all over the world, but above all about what they have been subject to in the last six months.
These professionals are naturally exhausted. Exhaustion from the daily physical violence that “the war against Covid-19” demands. Exhausted from the daily psychological violence they are subjected to, despite never abandoning the lives in their hands, sometimes failing in their mission.
They are also exhausted by the fear that they, too, may eventually contract or fatally succumb to the disease, since neither their own safety is guaranteed, either due to the lack of necessary personal protective equipment or due to excessive exposure to viral load, during the exercise of their responsibilities.
